Writing Practices Minor
University of Denver

The Minor in Writing Practices develops writing proficiencies across a variety of rhetorical situations towards building confident and rhetorically versatile writers. Students have the opportunity to further their understanding of the origins, cultural influences, evolving technologies, and purposes of writing in diverse settings. The minor helps students hone their writing, provide a further understanding of writing concepts and theories, and demonstrate abilities to employers and others. For me the minor allowed me to expand my writing skills and versatility. I hope to bring these skills and dynamic writing capabilities into a scientific field with the goal of connecting environmental science ideas to a wide range of audiences.

Theory, History, Research in Writing

Summer 2024

This class offered a survey of approaches to the study of argumentation as a writer and reader. It examined the elements of arguments and how they are utilized in many spheres of society. I took this as an online three week sequence course over summer quarter, so it was a rapid pace of the content covered. The class focused on producing work for an online mock debate, in which I had to collect an evidence packet which I then wrote and recorded a consecutive speech based upon. I was then tasked with responding with an affirmative speech to a classmate. This project developed strong and diverse argumentation skills as well as experience with critical source analysis. I included the written constructive speech as a part of this portfolio.
